Biden's withdrawal from the race against Trump sparks joy among liberal media members: "What a man, what a patriot"
MSNBC's Rachel Maddow describes an act of selfless devotion to one's country.
President Biden's decision not to seek a second term was met with jubilation by liberal media members, who hailed him as a patriot and looked forward to a reset race against former President Trump.
"MSNBC's Rachel Maddow praised President Biden on Sunday, calling him a "man, a patriot, and a selfless leader." She highlighted his achievements, including bringing the country back from COVID and giving the world the best recovery. Maddow also noted that Biden ended the presidency of Donald Trump and did so in a decent and civil manner."
Jon Stewart, the influential "Daily Show" host among the liberal voices skeptical of Biden's ability to beat Trump, wrote on X.
Biden's departure from the presidency marks a significant moment in American history, with Norm Eisen calling it "one of the most stunning acts of patriotism of my lifetime."
Biden announced his decision not to seek re-election in an open letter to the American people, marking a significant development in the 2024 election cycle. Despite weeks of insisting he would not drop out, he ultimately gave in to the pressure from panicking liberals who feared a loss to Trump following his poor debate performance. Biden is the first sitting president eligible for another term to not seek re-election since Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
"Biden wrote that it has been the greatest honor of his life to serve as President, but he believes it is in the best interest of his party and the country for him to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling his duties as President for the remainder of his term."
Biden announced that he would address the country about his decision later in the week, and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party's nominee at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which is a month away.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, a staunch Biden supporter, commented on the breaking news by stating, "The most significant aspect of this development is the Republican reaction," as Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and others criticized the move as an attempt to undermine Democratic primary voters who overwhelmingly supported Biden against weak opposition.
Scarborough stated that Trump's greatest fear was facing a potential Harris candidacy.
"According to Scarborough, Trump has always viewed himself as the ultimate disruptor. However, for the first time in both his political and media careers, the disruption is coming from outside his control. Trump and his campaign team are struggling to respond to this unexpected development, and they are not pleased with the situation."
"THANK GOD. Biden's finest hour. Now we can look forward to this," said Jennifer Rubin, a left-wing Washington Post columnist and strongly anti-Trump writer who is a rabid Biden-Harris supporter.
Max Fisher, a liberal journalist, wrote on X that the Democratic Party, despite its flaws, demonstrated collective authority at a critical moment, while the GOP failed to do so in 2016. The significance of this moment extends beyond 2024.
Jon Favreau, a co-host of "Pod Save America" and former Obama speechwriter, commended Biden for his selflessness.
"The President made a brave and selfless decision, putting the country's interests first, just as he has done for the past four years. This is the opposite of what Donald Trump did."
Trump, who was nominated by the Republicans last week at the age of 78, has surpassed Biden, who was 81 and set the record for the oldest major party nominee in American history in 2020, as the oldest president in the country's history. The two seemed to be engaging in a bit of trolling, as many Democrats and administration members have been criticized for withholding information about Biden's mental health decline from the public.
In October, Harris, who is turning 60, will be nearly 18 years younger than Trump, and liberals have widely written that Trump is now the "oldest nominee" ever.
"Bakari Sellers of CNN stated that the oldest nominee for president of the United States in American history is running against her. He expressed excitement about the changing dynamics and highlighted the generational divide. The man is nearly 80 years old, and the question is whether he can serve another four years. Sellers is uncertain about his ability to do so."
The president's decision to withdraw from the race marked the end of a difficult time for him, as he watched his pride being hurt as top Democrats and liberal media allies advised him to abandon his re-election bid for the sake of the country.
Despite initially refusing to go anywhere, Biden eventually relented.
