Biden's Medal of Freedom picks reveal Democrats' disconnect and disrespect for Republicans, according to a columnist.
The Medal of Freedom is the country's most esteemed civilian award.
President Biden's final Medal of Freedom recipients, consisting of liberal figures such as Hillary Clinton and billionaire George Soros, were criticized by a Politico columnist.
Michael Schaffer, a senior editor at Politico, wrote that Biden's award choices indicate that Democrats are "out of touch" and argued that the honor, which was once above politics, has now become a battleground.
The White House announced that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is the country's highest civilian honor and is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public, or private endeavors.
Biden's campaign choices, revealed on Jan. 4, were a group of losers who couldn't beat President-elect Trump.
"Despite their cultural and humanitarian achievements, Wintour and Andrés do not offer products that the average American can afford. The Republicanism of the Romney and Cheney families lost elections due to their unpopularity. This year, the Cheney endorsement did not aid the Democratic candidate."
Posthumously, Mitt Romney accepted a medal for his father, George Romney, a three-term Republican governor of Michigan.
Some Republicans felt like they were being trolled when George Soros, a liberal cause bankroller and longtime conservative smear-campaign target, was included in their group.
The columnist stated that the politics are unlikely to aid Biden's party or legacy.
The "laureates feel like a last-minute political diss of the incoming administration" if Biden does not rise above the political fray in Washington, D.C.
"Schaffer wrote that it is a bit petty to criticize a departing president for celebrating his own achievements as the curtain falls, especially since the winners have spent years at the top of their respective fields. However, the overtly political tone of the celebration diminishes the significance of the nation's highest civilian honor, which is intended to recognize exceptional contributions to America."
Elon Musk, a billionaire, emerged as a prominent voice among political commentators and Biden opponents who used the event to attack the president, specifically targeting megadonor George Soros.
"A travesty that Biden is giving Soros the Medal of Freedom," Musk tweeted last week, reacting to the news that the nation's highest civilian honor would be presented to Soros, whose financial empire has funded campaigns of progressive politicians, legislation, ballot measures, and initiatives.
