Biden's criticism of 'elites' during MSNBC interview sparks controversy.
Chuck Todd of NBC stated that if the elites were not present, his primary opponent would have been a formidable contender.
President Biden criticized "elites" in the Democratic Party on MSNBC on Monday, claiming they are trying to pressure him out of the 2024 race. However, some critics and media observers who support him are not convinced.
During a "Morning Joe" phone-in interview, Biden asserted his determination to remain in the 2024 presidential race, while addressing skepticism from within his own party.
"He expressed his frustration with the elites in the party to MSNBC hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, stating that he was not referring to them specifically, but to those in the party who knew more and should challenge him at the convention if they didn't think he should run for president."
During the interview, Brzezinski mentioned outlets that have expressed concerns about his viability against former President Trump, including The New York Times, The Economist, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and The Boston Globe. Additionally, some House Democrats have urged him not to run for re-election, as have prominent liberal figures such as Tim Ryan, James Carville, and David Axelrod.
""I don't care about big names, and they were wrong in 2020, 2022, and 2024 about the red wave. Let's go out and see people's reactions. You make a judgment!" Biden said."
NBC's Chuck Todd questioned the sincerity of Biden's rhetoric after his easy victory in the Democratic nomination race, as he had no significant opposition. Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., raised concerns about Biden's age and health during his primary campaign, but he never posed a serious threat to the president's chances of winning the nomination.
"Todd wrote that Biden's anger towards 'elites' may be misplaced. He argued that without the 'elites,' Biden would have faced a serious primary opponent. Additionally, Todd pointed out that the No Labels effort would have had a more compelling ticket if the 'elites' had not put too much faith in Biden, which ultimately led to the Democrats' current position."
"The Atlantic's Tim Alberta concurred, stating that the 'elites' ensured Biden's nomination by keeping their private concerns about him off the record."
Since Biden's halting debate showing last month, what was once a taboo media subject has become an open topic. Reports of his decline have emerged from the same media outlets that previously dismissed recent videos of Biden looking confused as "cheap fakes." The Wall Street Journal's story on Biden's cognitive issues was dismissed a month earlier, and Special Counsel Robert Hur's report in February questioned Biden's memory.
Politico's Jonathan Martin wrote Monday that Biden's attempts to win over his party base by portraying his critics as out of touch is a political maneuver.
"Martin wrote that Biden's strategy of portraying his opponents as elite white liberals who are out of touch with the more diverse and working-class grassroots of the party was what propelled his nomination after a series of setbacks in 2020. Now, it is his only way to survive."
Planet Chronicle contributor Joe Concha isn't buying the populist talk.
The politician, who has spent his career in politics, is attempting to present himself as a populist like Trump, fighting against the corrupt system.
Not only liberal media members but also prominent Democratic donors like Abigail Disney have expressed their dissatisfaction with Biden's candidacy and threatened to withhold their financial support if he doesn't step down as the Democratic nominee.
Biden spoke directly to donors on a call after his MSNBC interview, despite railing against them as "elites" who don't carry the same weight with him as the American people.
Gabe Fleisher, a journalist, pointed out the irony of Biden's morning criticism of "elites" before taking questions from his biggest donors, despite not having taken questions from voters in a town hall event since 2021.
A group of liberal media figures, including Biden's friend Thomas Friedman, David Ignatius of The Washington Post, and Mark Leibovich of The Atlantic, have stated that the risk of Biden staying in the race was too high after he struggled against Trump in the debate.
If the rapid change of "Morning Joe" host indicates their support, they will likely stand by Biden to prevent Trump from winning another term.
After the debate debacle last month, Scarborough posed the question, "If a CEO performed like Biden did, would any Fortune 500 corporation in America retain them?"
A week after returning from vacation, Scarborough advised Democrats to "take a deep breath" before making any hasty decisions. On Monday, Scarborough stated that Biden could now confidently claim he is battling "media elites" as he resists calls to resign.
Last week, when Scarborough was absent, Brzezinski gave a lengthy monologue, urging people not to underestimate Biden, stating that counting him out is always a mistake.
The White House spokesman informed Planet Chronicle Digital that Biden excelled in the MSNBC interview and stated that the president did not utilize notes during the call.
The Biden campaign didn't respond to a request for comment.
