Biden's 2024 campaign: Schumer reveals private talks with president.
In July, Biden withdrew from the presidential race.
Schumer, a prominent Democrat and ex-Senate Majority Leader, disclosed his substantial influence on Biden's decision to abandon his presidential campaign.
"If you lose to Trump and the Senate and House are lost, the 50 years of remarkable work will be lost, and you will be remembered as one of the darkest figures in American history, Schumer told Biden in a private conversation at his Rehobeth Beach house, according to The New York Times."
"Schumer advised the president not to run for office, stating that he wouldn't do it if he were in the president's shoes."
In the aftermath of Biden's poor debate performance against Trump in June, Schumer and other Democratic Party leaders began discussing Biden's campaign prospects. Schumer privately advised donors to hold off on committing to Biden until he made a clearer decision about his future.
According to the Times, Schumer was privately urging donors and allies to keep quiet about their concerns over Biden's age and ability to complete the campaign.
"Schumer advised against being public, stating that it would likely anger the person in question and cause unnecessary tension. However, if possible, he suggested reaching out to individuals in the campaign or contacting the White House."
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries was working to push Biden off the campaign in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris.
"Jeffries informed allies in the campaign's final months that they lacked data, but the most potent narrative in American politics is change, with Vice President Harris embodying it."
Some of Biden's supporters defended his ability to serve as president and as the Democratic Party candidate, including Steve Ricchetti, an adviser to the president.
"Ricchetti stated, according to the Times, that they believe their allies on the Hill are making a mistake."
After Biden declared he would exit the presidential race, media outlets including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal disclosed that advisers close to the president had long been worried about his health and stamina.
A Times report from December stated that Biden appears older and slower with each passing day. Despite this, aides claim that he is still sharp in the Situation Room, handling global issues such as brokering a cease-fire in Lebanon and dealing with the chaos in Syria. However, it is difficult to believe that he seriously thought he could continue doing the world's most demanding job for another four years.
