Biden DOJ's slow progress on Trump investigation frustrates James Comey.
Comey explained why he understood their actions, but he believes they made a mistake.
In an interview on Tuesday, former FBI Director James Comey criticized the Biden Department of Justice for being "too slow" in investigating former President Trump, stating it as a crucial error.
Comey learned valuable lessons from his role as a national punching bag during the 2016 election, as he told MSNBC's Alex Wagner.
"I'm hesitant to throw any rocks because I've experienced a lot of them, but I believe they learned some valuable lessons from my own experience and the Trump administration. However, they were too slow, which cost us time and resources. We finally got a special counsel, but we're still stuck in our current situation."
"He added, "I would have hoped they would have moved faster, but given the circumstances when they took office and what they were trying to achieve, I understand why they did it. However, I still believe it was a mistake.""
In November 2022, Merrick Garland, Biden's Attorney General, appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to investigate Trump's alleged mismanagement of classified documents and his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot.
Trump was indicted by the DOJ in both cases last year, but there is no clear trial start date for either one after various postponements and motions. It seems increasingly likely that the only trial Trump will attend before the 2024 election is his current case in New York, where he is accused of falsifying business records about a hush money payment to Stormy Daniels.
The investigation into Trump by Garland was criticized by some Democrats for being too cautious and avoiding any political overtones. The New York Times described the investigation as "maddeningly slow" in a detailed analysis of the probe in March.
"According to the Times, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., stated earlier this year that the delay may have caused a situation where none of the trials could proceed, and he added that the department shares some of the blame."
Trump dismissed Comey as FBI director in 2017, and since then, Comey has become a vocal critic of the former president. In an election call, Comey urged people to support Biden, cautioning that Trump would target the DOJ and FBI if he were reelected.
Comey believed that Garland had learned too much from the 2016 election, where the FBI and Clinton's private email server were the main focus. Comey later announced the reopening of the investigation into Clinton's server in October, following the discovery of her emails in a separate investigation into Anthony Weiner.
"Comey expressed a profound and enduring regret that they were involved in the investigation, stating that he felt a sense of regret the moment he was briefed on the 27th of October. He added that it was fascinating to reflect on how they were grappling with the crisis while the Trump side was attempting to conceal information."
The Department of Justice didn't reply to a request for comment.
