Biden criticized in Washington Post for prolonging his presidency: "Lack of knowledge on when to step down"
Matt Bai stated that Biden would be remembered as someone who didn't know when to stop.
On Monday, Washington Post columnist Matt Bai criticized President Biden for holding onto power for too long, arguing that his legacy would be defined by his inability to know when to step down.
"As many in his generation will be remembered, he will be chiefly known for not knowing when to quit his noble service," Bai wrote.
Vice President Kamala Harris assumed the Democratic presidential campaign after the president dropped out in July, following a poor debate performance against President-elect Donald Trump in June. Despite her efforts, she ultimately lost the election.
In June, when Biden debated Trump, it was evident that history had been taken hostage by a perilous illusion, one that his top advisors and the media who covered him closely shared, according to Bai, despite acknowledging Biden's legislative accomplishments.
Biden's final year of presidency may have been marked by a reluctance to relinquish power, according to Bai's description.
The challenge of determining who would succeed Biden was an awkward problem. Despite her poor performance as a presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris was rallied around by Democratic leaders and Biden's aides. However, they worried that she may not be able to win in a competitive primary. Modern Democrats are afraid of any process they cannot control.
Despite low approval ratings, Biden believed he was the best chance to defeat Trump. After Harris dropped out, Biden reportedly regretted his decision to drop out and still believed he could have won.
Despite being in the final moments of his presidency, it is clear that Biden should have run for president again. Looking back, it will be seen as one of the most obvious acts of denial ever committed by an incumbent party.
As Ford, Bush, and Carter received the Profile in Courage Award and the Nobel Prize, respectively, Biden will have to settle for a train station in Wilmington, Delaware, and a rest stop on Interstate 95.
Bai criticized the president and his advisors for saying, "You're not truly perceiving what you believe you're perceiving," just days after Harris' defeat.
Biden has always served his country with competence and honesty. However, it is uncertain if the same can be said for the Democratic aides and leaders who believed that voters could be swayed to doubt their own experiences, as Biden wrote in a Nov. 8 column.
