Biden acknowledges that he may not have continued for another term if he had been re-elected: "Who knows?"
"At present, everything is going well. However, it is uncertain what I will become when I am 86 years old," says Biden.
In an interview with USA Today in the Oval Office, President Biden acknowledged concerns about his age and discussed his legacy, while still claiming he would have won another term if he'd run against Donald Trump, but admitting he's not sure if he could have lasted four more years.
Would you have had the energy to serve another four years in office, do you think? Susan Page of USA Today asked.
"I didn't know if I was the right person to run for president," Biden admitted. "When I first announced, I talked to Barack [Obama] about it and thought I was the best candidate. I didn't intend to run after my son Beau died, but when Trump ran for re-election, I believed I had the best chance of defeating him."
Biden stated that he wasn't seeking the presidency at the age of 85 or 86, and he discussed passing the baton, reflecting on his age concerns before dropping out of the race.
Numerous news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, have featured interviews with former and current White House staff members expressing concerns about Biden's endurance.
"The president continued, 'But I don't know, who the hell knows? So far, so good. But who knows what I'll be when I'm 86 years old?'"
Despite his repeated claims before dropping out that he was in great shape, the president's words appeared to be a stark admission that he realized his own limits as the oldest president in American history.
Biden reiterated that he believed he could have won against Trump in a rematch. The president withdrew from the race after a poor debate performance in June, which exposed his cognitive issues that many of his supporters had dismissed or concealed. Biden eventually backed Vice President Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost the general election.
During a discussion about his presidential legacy, Biden made comments.
""My hope was that history would record my arrival and my plan to revive the economy and regain America's global prominence," the president stated."
Biden contended that his age provides him with an advantage, as he has extensive experience with world leaders and witnessed significant historical changes in various regions globally.
Biden stated that the only benefit of being an elderly individual is having had the opportunity to know numerous significant world leaders for an extended period.
"He continued, "Having a perspective on each of their interests helped me navigate the fundamental changes happening in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Far East. I hope that I am viewed in this context.""
