Before delivering a eulogy at his father's funeral, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith received a valuable lesson from his pastor.

In an interview with Sean Hannity on the new two-part Fox Nation special, "Sean," Smith revealed that while he couldn't mend his relationship with his father while he was alive, "the reconciliation came the day of his funeral" in 2018. Despite not having planned it, Smith announced to his family that he wanted to give a eulogy. Before his speech, he confided in his pastor, saying, "I’ve been holding it in for years." Smith told Hannity that he disagreed with the way his father treated his mother, explaining in the interview, "what he felt, how he acted, what he said, is nothing compared to what he did to her."

Smith's pastor advised him not to discuss his grievances during his father's funeral. Smith recalled his pastor taking him to scripture in Matthew about forgiveness. He understood that forgiveness was the ultimate power. Smith eulogized his father, following his pastor's advice to be more forgiving in his language. He ended his speech by acknowledging the complaints but emphasizing his love for his father.

"My pastor's conversation with me that morning was crucial because it prevented the person who my sister heard on the phone an hour earlier from giving the eulogy."

Smith further discussed his deep affection for his mother, referring to her as "the best mother I've ever had." He shared that he and his sister witnessed their mother's struggle with hunger to ensure they were never hungry.
