An American scientist is urging citizens to abandon air conditioning use for 25 years during summer to combat climate change.

Stan Cox, an Ecosphere Fellow at the Land Institute, considers the U.S. military an "enemy" in the fight against climate change. In a guest essay in the New York Times on Saturday, Cox argued that air-conditioning is exacerbating the problem, stating that "air-conditioning is making our summers even hotter" due to climate change.

Running A.C. units, even in mild temperatures, worsens the climate crisis as 90% of American households own them and produce greenhouse gases.

The scientist recommended extreme measures to cope with summer heat, including using the lawn sprinkler and spending most of the summer outdoors.

He said that when it becomes too hot, we can relieve ourselves by lightly spraying water on our arms, legs, and faces. Alternatively, taking a quick, cold shower or spending some time with a lawn sprinkler can also provide relief.

Cox and his wife use electric fans instead of air conditioning because they are free of refrigerants that contribute to global warming.

Cox reduces the use of appliances that contribute to heat in addition to turning off AC.

"We kept other appliances and devices turned off as much as possible to reduce heat generation. Dishwashers are particularly problematic, producing both heat and humidity. We don't own one," he stated.

His refrigerator is set at the lowest possible temperature.

"Of course, you can't unplug the refrigerator, but we keep ours set at just under 40 degrees," he stated.

Cox believes that people will eventually become accustomed to life without air conditioning.

"Our species has evolved to adapt to varying climatic conditions, and we retain this ability. Studies show that exposure to warm or hot summer weather can help us become accustomed to higher temperatures. This can reduce our reliance on air conditioning. The less we use it, the easier it is to live without it," he stated.
