Amidst the upheaval at the LA Times, conservative commentator Scott Jennings has been appointed to the paper's editorial board.
CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings expressed his belief that Dr. Soon-Shiong is undertaking something significant and innovative, and he is grateful for being asked to contribute to it.
On Friday, Scott Jennings announced that he had joined the Los Angeles Times' editorial board as per the owner's new directive to make the paper more balanced.
L.A. Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong was praised by Jennings as "important and groundbreaking" on X.
Jennings wrote on X that it is true that he has accepted Dr. Pat Soon-Shiong's invitation to join the editorial board of the @latimes.
Over the past few years, I have written columns for a renowned newspaper and was thrilled to contribute under such a distinguished and esteemed masthead. I am passionate about newspapers and the critical role they play in journalism, particularly in providing diverse perspectives. When I write commentary, I always begin with the truth and offer my honest opinion, drawing on my conservative values and experiences. I believe that Dr. Soon-Shiong is making a significant impact and am honored to have been asked to participate in his groundbreaking endeavor.
The paper overhaul, as stated by Jennings, is a step towards resolving the concerns many Americans have about biased media reporting.
Jennings concluded his post by stating that roughly half of the country often feels that legacy media doesn't care about their views and values, and he plans to represent those Americans who feel ignored or ridiculed in legacy media. He also applauded Dr Soon-Shiong's move to bring balance to the editorial board. Despite this new opportunity, his other professional obligations won't be impacted.
Earlier in the week, the CNN senior political commentator was invited to join the editorial board of the paper by its owner, who announced this new direction.
Scott has been accepted to join our new editorial board, and I am thrilled to have him on board. He brings thoughtful and balanced views to the table, and I appreciate his willingness to take on the challenge. Stay tuned as we continue to grow our board with experts.
Before joining CNN as a contributor in 2017 and becoming a L.A. Times contributing columnist in 2019, Jennings had previously served as an aide to President George W. Bush.
Following President-elect Donald Trump's victory, Soon-Shiong declared his intention to revamp the paper and establish a new editorial board that would allow for a broader range of perspectives.
Soon-Shiong stated to Planet Chronicle that he desired a clear separation between news and opinion in the paper's reporting.
"Soon-Shiong emphasized to Trace Gallagher on "Planet Chronicle @ Night" that news should only present facts, and opinions should be considered as the voice of the news. He advocated for all sides to be heard and for the news to be objective."
In November, the L.A. Times owner faced criticism from readers and staff following the editorial board's decision not to endorse a presidential candidate for the first time since 2008.
