Alabama resident responds to council president's decision to dissolve meeting due to migrant concerns.
One resident expressed frustration to town councilmembers, stating that attending the meeting made her understand why nothing gets accomplished.
An Alabama city council member expelled all attendees from a meeting in an authoritarian manner following inquiries about the influx of Haitian immigrants in the area, as stated by a speaker during the public comment segment, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
The Sylacauga City Council President, Tiffany Nix, adjourned a meeting after several attendees raised concerns about the illegal immigrant issue, specifically regarding allegations that buses of Haitians were brought in to work, but many were seen wandering aimlessly in the streets.
Nix cut off David Phillips before he could finish speaking.
"In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, he stated that it was not just authoritarian but totalitarian, and he considered it to be un-American."
The purpose is to serve the community, so when the community arrives, you respond to their inquiries because you work for them. This is the American way, and we take pride in being an all-American town.
President Nix argued that the migrants in the town should be welcomed as valuable members of society, while also stating that the council was unaware of how they arrived, despite residents asserting that some arrived via bus.
""We have no information to share with you, and there's no need for us to speculate about why [they're here] or to investigate," she informed the concerned citizens."
"Nix stated, "I welcome anyone who wants to attend. I believe that as long as individuals are not breaking the law, they are not causing any problems. I don't see the issue.""
Though they arrived under the premise of working, a resident questioned whether the migrants were actually employed.
"They're not working despite coming here to work," she remarked.
"What's the problem with that?" Nix replied, "I don't see any issues."
Watching the city council meeting tonight, I can understand why nothing gets accomplished here.
Philips stated that the council's attitude during the process was entirely unacceptable.
Phillips stated, "You're treating them as if they are lawful U.S. citizens, but they are not."
Nix interrupted and called for the meeting to be adjourned.
Nix instructed the residents to leave as the meeting had ended. She signaled for an adjournment, which was approved by the other board members.
Philips expressed shock over the council's behavior, as he told Planet Chronicle Digital.
"I was taken aback. Although I've witnessed some outrageous things at city council meetings, that was particularly egregious. Our country was founded on the principle of basic free speech, and public comment is a fundamental part of the process. The podium and microphone are there for a reason, allowing people to ask questions. However, she completely undermined that by blowing it all out of proportion."
Residents could be heard groaning and complaining in the background.
A resident stated, "It's good to know they don't want to hear the truth."
President Nix replied, "I am uncertain about your expectations for our actions."
Another resident stated that interrupting public comment during a meeting is a breach of public law.
Nix did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
