A North Carolina family was stunned when their cat returned home safely after floating away in Hurricane Helene flooding over a week earlier.

Blanco, the Collins family's cat, returned home after floating away on a rooftop in Burnsville last month due to Hurricane Helene's flooding and mudslides.

On Tuesday, during "FOX & Friends," Camille told Ainsley Earhardt that eight days after the event, they still tell their kids that what they experienced was similar to the movie "Homeward Bound."

""This cat, who came to us as a stray, must have used all his nine lives because he was found in our compost bin earlier this year and nursed back to life. He's the kind of cat that goes on hikes with you," she said."

Cat returns to NC family
The Collins family told the story of their cat's safe return during 'Fox & Friends' as they continue to rebuild following the catastrophic Hurricane Helene.

Nan, Camille's mother-in-law, was filming and taking pictures of the floodwaters when she realized Blanco was in danger of floating away.

"She stated that Blanco climbed onto the distribution line and saw them attempt to climb the metal roof. Unfortunately, he ended up falling into the river, which was later discovered to be the ocean, and that was the last time anyone saw him."

Inland communities were devastated by Hurricane Helene, which dumped trillions of gallons of water despite being far from the threat of storm surge or sea level rise.

After the hurricane hit the Florida coast, Camille's husband David stated that they lost "almost everything" in the community.

"The floodwaters rose above 500-year levels, at least ten feet, and everything we own is in ruins behind us," David stated. "The neighbors' homes, which have been standing since the 1920s, have disappeared, and we've lost almost everything we own."

The number of deaths from Hurricane Helene in six states is at least 224, according to FOX Weather. The death toll is expected to increase as search and rescue efforts continue.

Since 1916, the community of Altapass has experienced one of the most significant weather events in western North Carolina, with more than 20 inches of rain (50.8 centimeters) in a 24-hour span.
