Adidas is accused of insensitivity by Bella Hadid after being removed from their Olympics campaign.
During the 1972 Munich Olympics, Palestinian terrorists from Black September killed 11 Israeli athletes.
Adidas has been criticized for its insensitivity in featuring Bella Hadid in a 1972 Olympics-inspired sneaker campaign, which drew comparisons to the Palestinian terror attack that killed 11 Israeli athletes.
The Associated Press reported that the German-based sportswear company featured Hadid in its advertising for SL72 shoes, which were inspired by the 1972 Olympic Games. However, critics, including the State of Israel, objected to Hadid being "the face of their campaign."
The American Jewish Committee stated that the inclusion of a "vocal anti-Israel model" to recall the "dark Olympics" is either a "massive oversight" or "intentionally inflammatory."
Adidas removed Hadid from the campaign after she apologized and stated that she wouldn't have participated if she had known about the terror attack.
The company acknowledged that unintentional connections have been made to tragic historical events, causing any upset or distress, and expressed their sincere apologies.
Hadid expressed shock, upset, and disappointment in the lack of sensitivity in the campaign, stating that if she had been informed, she would never have participated.
In 1972, Black September terrorists kidnapped and murdered 11 Israeli athletes in a 20-hour period. The details of their torture were made public in 2015. Yossef Romano, a weightlifter, was castrated by the terrorists after attempting to stop the attack. The autopsies of the other athletes revealed severe injuries from beatings, including bone fractures.
Golda Meir, Israel's Prime Minister at the time, retaliated to the Munich attacks with a secret Mossad operation called "Wrath of God," which resulted in the assassination of at least 11 individuals believed to be involved in the planning or execution of the attack.
"Hadid acknowledged in her apology that she had no knowledge of the historical connection to the atrocious events in 1972. She added that her team, Adidas, and she should have done more research to have known about it."
The model stated that the connection between the liberation of the Palestinian people and the tragic attack was not appropriate, as Palestine is not associated with terrorism. The campaign inadvertently brought attention to an event that did not reflect the true nature of the Palestinian people.
Adidas announced that they made an unintentional mistake in their campaign for the SL72 shoe and apologize to their campaign. They are now revising the campaign.
Adidas, when contacted, directed Planet Chronicle Digital to a previous statement.
