A Politico writer's Bluesky account was briefly suspended and they received graphic insults for a post about Elon Musk.
A Politico writer described the criticism directed at Bluesky as "overwhelmingly ad hominem attacks."
A Bluesky reporter was temporarily suspended from the platform after receiving thousands of angry, profane messages for posting about a rival social media platform.
Michael Kruse of Politico shared a story from a colleague about whether Democrats should continue to engage on Twitter, which was bought by Elon Musk and has become a liberal bogeyman, on Bluesky. He posted a quote from an anonymous Democratic communications staffer that said, "Leaving Twitter because you don't like Elon is the kind of purity politics that landed Democrats in this mess to begin with."
Kruse received thousands of angry replies, with some calling him a "f---ing dork," "f---ing moron," "dumb f---," and "b---h," while another user suggested using a running chainsaw as a way to improve the United States.
Kruse recounted the story because of Bluesky's reputation as a "safe space" from X, which many left-wingers complain has become a hateful cesspool under Musk. Kruse stated that he had never experienced such a barrage of personal attacks on X, but Bluesky users were furious that he would question why they had left Musk's site.
While it may not be a significant issue because it is a common occurrence in online discussions, Kruse noted that he receives less abuse than those who are not white, male, and gentile.
"Although this was noteworthy, I have never experienced such a prolonged attack on Twitter as I did here, except for a few episodes. Bluesky was created as an alternative to X.com, but the attacks here were mostly personal attacks."
Kruse expressed confusion about Bluesky users' tone if the platform's purpose was to provide a respite from toxicity.
What exactly is the toxin? Unpleasant thoughts? Ugly reactions? Perhaps the toxin is greater than what Bluesky can handle. Social media? People in general? Even the idea of a safe space - as a smart Democrat texted me while this was happening, safe for whom and from what?
Bluesky did not provide Kruse with an explanation for why his account was taken down, but it was reinstated shortly after without any additional information.
Since the election, Bluesky has gained numerous new accounts, many of which are left-leaning media figures disillusioned with X and Musk's backing of President-elect Donald Trump.
The Babylon Bee was censored for sharing an article that referred to transgender Biden administration official Rachel Levine as a "man of the year."
Planet Chronicle Digital reached out to Bluesky and Kruse for comment.
