A lifelong Democrat who voted for Trump confronts a CBS reporter about the state of the Biden economy.
Among Trump voters, the economy was considered a top concern.
In Pennsylvania, a Democratic voter argued that "no one's wages increased" after CBS reporter Scott Pelley inquired about her vote for President-elect Donald Trump.
In the aftermath of Trump's victory and significant Republican gains, "60 Minutes" journeyed to a swing state to engage with ordinary citizens regarding the Democrats' misinterpretation of public opinion.
Roz Werkheiser, a diner owner, cited rising food costs as a significant concern for one voter.
"The food cost has caused the prices to increase, as evidenced by a family of five people spending $100 with a tip for breakfast, which is indeed crazy," Werkheiser said to CBS journalist Scott Pelley.
She added, 'My mother used to always say, "Gotta vote Democrat. They're for the poor people."'
"You grew up in a Democratic household?," Pelley asked.
"Yes," Werkheiser answered.
"But you just voted for Donald Trump," Pelley said.
Werkheiser replied again, "Yes."
Pelley contended with Werkheiser that despite it being a major concern for voters before the election, the economy has actually improved.
"Are you not feeling the positive economic changes, such as the more than 50% decrease in inflation, falling interest rates, declining mortgage rates, and rising wages?" Pelley inquired.
"Werkheiser stated, "I don't feel it. No, I don't feel it at all. Everybody I talk to, nobody's wages went up. But we had four years of this. I mean, four years. Gas was super high. Yes, it just went down now, but what-- the past four-- three and a half years it was up.""
Although inflation has decreased from its peak in 2022, prices have not returned to their pre-pandemic levels. A FOX Business analysis in September revealed that food prices increased by approximately 22.8%, energy prices increased by approximately 42.4%, and new vehicle prices increased by approximately 19.5% during the Biden administration compared to Trump's first term.
In the 2024 Planet Chronicle Voter Analysis, the economy was the second-most important issue for Trump voters, after immigration. However, among all voters, the economy was the top concern, with 39% of respondents citing it as their top priority.
A significant portion of Trump supporters agreed that the economy was "not so good" or "poor."
