A Florida boy sets up a lemonade stand to pay for his fallen officer father's daycare expenses: "What Jesus would do"
Nearly $4,000 has been raised for the family of Ignacio 'Dan' Diaz by Charlie Allsup.
In the wake of the recent tragic crash that claimed the lives of three law enforcement officers in Florida, a local boy is taking charge of a classic childhood activity: setting up a lemonade stand.
"During an interview on "Fox & Friends First," 9-year-old Charlie Allsup stated, "I saw a need and thought, 'That's what Jesus would do,' so I decided to help.""
Charlie's sister attends the same daycare as the son of fallen Palm Beach Deputy Sheriff Ignacio "Dan" Diaz, which motivated Charlie to set up a lemonade stand to help the family with their tuition expenses.
On Nov. 21, a Jeep SUV struck and killed Deputy Sheriff Ralph "Butch" Waller and Corporal Luis Paez while they were stopped on the shoulder of Southern Boulevard with their motorcycles.
At the hospital, Waller and Paez were declared dead following the crash, while Diaz was critically injured and underwent surgery, but ultimately passed away from his injuries.
A large crowd gathered in West Palm Beach on Tuesday morning for a memorial, with President-elect Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis among the attendees.
The Diaz family's daycare expenses for several months have been covered by Charlie's lemonade stand, which has raised nearly $4,000.
"Charlie's mother, Christina, stated that families facing tragedies may not always know what they need. However, Charlie's actions allowed families to focus on the present moment and not worry about additional burdens. Additionally, Charlie's contributions enabled the community to contribute as well."
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office stated that Diaz, who had been with the department since 2004 and spent over a decade in the motor unit, valiantly battled but ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in a devastating accident.
Christina, whose husband is a law enforcement officer, admits that watching her son tackle this project has been an emotional experience.
"Raising children is challenging, and often we as parents doubt if our decisions are best for our kids. However, witnessing something positive reinforces our belief that we are on the right track."
