A democratic senator calls for the party to adapt and transform following the Trump victory.
The Senate is now under the control of the Republicans.
As President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration approaches, congressional Democrats are discussing their strategies for dealing with four years of Republican rule in the White House.
"Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., stated in an interview with Semafor that it's time to accept the reality that Trump won and that people want change, so we must be willing to change as well."
"Welch stated that there will be numerous chances for us to battle on issues of genuine principles, where our stance is that it will make life more difficult and costly for individuals, not merely because we dislike Trump."
Some Democrats, such as Colorado Sen. John Hickenlooper, are indicating that they can find common ground with Republicans to achieve policy objectives.
Semafor was told by Hickenlooper that there are a million decisions that need to be made within that, and he is willing to look for compromises wherever possible.
We’ve seen the movie… eight years ago. It was all a surprise to us," Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., told Semafor. "Now we know the basic playbook.
Kaine stated that on a specific day, he is attempting to accomplish two tasks simultaneously: passing things and preventing negative events from occurring.
Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., wrote in a guest essay for The New York Times published on New Year's Day that Democrats should avoid knee-jerk opposition to the Trump agenda and instead look for ways to compromise with the incoming administration.
