A Dem lawmaker accuses critics of attempting to silence him regarding trans women in sports: "Attempting to cancel me."
What is our approach if we want to win elections, the Democratic lawmaker questioned?
Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., stated on MSNBC that Democrats were "dismissing" Americans' concerns amid criticism he has faced for opposing transgender athletes in women's sports.
"Joe Scarborough, co-host of "Morning Joe," questioned Moulton about the Tufts University political science department chair David Art's reported statement that he consulted with colleagues and does not want Moulton's office to contact Tufts about internships, and that Tufts will not facilitate internship opportunities for students with them."
If a Tuft student were to intern in a Republican office, what would political science professors do? This highlights the issue with cancel culture, as Moulton stated.
The Democratic Party's crushing election losses were explained by Moulton as concerns over the left's support for transgender women participating in women's sports.
The Tufts students who want to engage in debates and have different views are being hurt by people who try to cancel them. This approach of preaching down to people and labeling them morally wrong if they don't meet strict ideological purity tests will not help win elections.
Scarborough concurred, stating, "it's impossible to discuss it."
Moulton emphasized the importance of remembering the foundational American value of freedom of speech, stating that if Democrats cannot discuss difficult issues, they will not be successful in addressing them. He added that the most vulnerable groups, such as trans kids and minorities, would be harmed the most by the hateful Trump agenda, and that a rational response is necessary to counteract it.
Moulton pointed out that Vice President Harris faced a problem in this election and lacked a "response" to the issue.
In an interview with The New York Times, Moulton discussed his stance on the issue, drawing on his role as a father to two daughters.
""As a Democrat, I'm afraid to say that I don't want my two little girls getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, even though it's a valid concern," he said."
He doubled down on his comments in a statement on Friday.
"He believes that competitive women's sports should limit the participation of those with physical advantages due to being born male, while also supporting the civil rights of all Americans, including transgender rights."
