A columnist critical of Trump delivers a scathing evaluation of Biden's presidency as he departs.
George Will claims that no previous president has used mass communications to insult more Americans than Biden.
In a Wednesday column, George Will, an anti-Trump columnist with The Washington Post, gave a harsh critique of President Biden's "unsuccessful" leadership.
"Joe Biden's presidency is ending with a flurry of decisions that validate voters' rejection of his vice president, who, when asked, could not identify a flaw in his record," said Will, adding that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris "pretended to be something they were not."
The columnist argued that the president's handlers convinced him to adopt a persona similar to Franklin D. Roosevelt, which ultimately led to the downfall of his vice president, who ran as a genuine progressive.
The American Rescue Plan increased demand for goods and services beyond the economy's production capacity.
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, a $1.9 trillion package, aimed to aid Americans affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through stimulus payments and local funding to revive the economy. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), $402.2 billion of the total package was allocated towards stimulus checks for those who lost employment during the pandemic.
The Biden administration's loose spending was continuously criticized by Will, who pointed out that three weeks before the 2024 election, the administration hastily opened the spending taps before January 20.
Intel, a company that produces computer chips, received nearly $8 billion in subsidies from the administration after losing $16.6 billion in the previous quarter. The CEO of the company retired five days later, and the board of directors stated that it would help restore investor confidence. However, Will believes that the Biden administration's investors already had high confidence in their investments.
Biden's use of mass communications to insult Americans with hyperbolic warnings about Jim Crow 2.0 and semi-fascism was more insulting than any previous president.
"Biden stated that Democrats would safeguard American democracy in 2024. The preservation, presumably, would commence following Democrats' efforts to prohibit Biden's adversary from the ballot and imprison him," Will remarked.
The column criticized the Biden Administration for its "extralegal overreaching" and highlighted the "judicial rebukes" of its policies, including an eviction moratorium, vaccine mandate, student loan forgiveness, and pressure on social media companies to intensify censorship ("content moderation") of speech ("disinformation") that the administration finds annoying.
The Post columnist criticized Biden for changing his stance on his son Hunter's "financial escapades," stating that he initially claimed ignorance, then denied involvement, and finally admitted to not benefiting from them.
Hunter Biden's preemptive protection may have been motivated by his father's reputation as a 'big guy,' as Hunter had referred to him in one of his undertakings.
Biden's legacy was criticized by a bipartisan group, who argued that his pardon would harm it. However, a British historical site once displayed a sign warning of prosecution for anyone who would "damage the ruins."
