15,000+ migrants arrive in Ohio city, exacerbating housing crisis: 'Setting us up to fail'
A housing crisis has been caused in an Ohio city due to an influx of approximately 15,000 to 20,000 migrants.
Over the past few years, Springfield, Ohio has been grappling with an influx of approximately 15,000 to 20,000 Haitian migrants into its community of around 58,000 residents.
""Fox & Friends First" host Springfield Mayor Rob Rue stated that the current border crisis, which is a policy of this administration, is negatively impacting cities like ours and putting an excessive tax on us."
The influx of Haitian migrants into the area over the past five years has led to a significant increase in the population, as described by Rue.
This has caused great concern for our community as it has overwhelmed safety services.
Bryan Heck, the City Manager, stated that the city lacks the ability to maintain this rate of illegal immigration.
Our infrastructure, public safety, schools, health care, and housing are being taxed, as he stated.
Heck stated that the city had a housing crisis before the surge, which exacerbated the problem a hundred times.
"Without federal assistance or support, communities like Springfield will fail due to their inability to sustain the current setup."
Federal funding and support are tied to population numbers, but the influx is not captured by the federal government.
The reduction in federal funding over the past few years is a cause for concern for our community, as we require an additional 15 to 20,000 to support our needs.
The federal government is unaware of where migrants go after crossing the border, but they often end up in communities like Springfield.
In D.C., both Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, shed light on this issue.
Heck wrote to Senators Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, seeking federal assistance.
During a Senate Banking Committee meeting, Vance discussed the letter to address the impact of the influx on housing affordability and availability in Springfield.
