Authorities locate SUV and AR-15 in search for I-75 shooting suspect
The search for Joseph Couch was temporarily halted on Saturday evening before being resumed on Sunday.
Authorities have recovered an SUV and an AR-15 rifle in the search for a suspected gunman who allegedly fired near Interstate 75, injuring several individuals and causing a car accident.
An SUV belonging to the suspect, Joseph A. Couch, was found on a U.S. Forest Service Road near exit 49 on I-75 Saturday evening, along with a rifle case, according to the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.
On Sunday afternoon, sheriff's deputies found a rifle near I-75, where an SUV was recovered the previous evening.
The manhunt began after the shooting occurred on Saturday at approximately 6 p.m. near exit 49 on I-75.
Authorities later named Couch as a person of interest in the shooting, after police initially responded to reports that a suspect was shooting at drivers from an overpass or a wooded area.
Spokesperson for the sheriff's office, Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, stated that five individuals were shot on Sunday morning and were in stable condition. However, some of the victims sustained "very serious" injuries, including one who was shot in the face.
Two other people were hurt in the vehicle accident, he said.
The search was halted on Saturday night because of darkness, but the officials maintained control over the situation, according to the sheriff's office.
The search resumed Sunday and continues.
