Riley Leonard, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback, has frequently expressed his religious views and conviction in God while in college.

Leonard stated before the national championship game against Ohio State on Wednesday that he believes that the open faith players on each team are the reason for their competition for college football's top prize.

"I believe that things happen for a reason, not just for us, but also for Ohio State. I think we are the two main teams that publicly display our faith the most," he stated, according to Sports Michiana. "I'm not sure if this is some divine teaching or if it's just a coincidence," he added.

"I believe that Jesus was watching over us during the entire season and had a purpose for placing these two teams on a pedestal."

Leonard has openly discussed his faith, particularly during the College Football Playoff.

In the semifinals, Penn State's win over them was in the second half, and he was questioned about the changes that occurred.

"Just as I started trusting in the Lord, I looked up and said, 'Jesus, I trust your will for my life 100%.' This team also trusts in Jesus and his plan for this season," he said via The Deseret.

He also thanked God after the Fighting Irish’s win over Georgia.

He thanked his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ first and foremost, acknowledging that without him, he wouldn't exist and the group wouldn't be together.
