A Democrat senator responds to Gaetz's nomination: "Red alert moment"
Chris Murphy, a Democratic senator, asserts that Trump's selection of Matt Gaetz for attorney general indicates he is fulfilling his campaign pledges.
According to Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., the appointment of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., as U.S. attorney general by President-elect Trump indicates his intention to fulfill his campaign promises to prosecute his political adversaries.
Floridian Representative Matt Gaetz was deemed "dangerously unqualified" by Murphy to lead the Justice Department due to his advocacy for abolishing law enforcement agencies that do not align with conservative priorities.
Murphy stated that Gaetz has been Trump's staunch defender in regards to Trump's attacks on democracy, particularly his efforts to overthrow the government on January 6th. Additionally, Gaetz has openly advocated for the abolition of law enforcement agencies if they do not align with conservative political priorities.
"The nomination of Matt Gaetz for the Department of Justice is a red alert moment for American democracy. The reason for his nomination is clear: to implement Donald Trump's plan to transform the DOJ from a defender of all citizens to an instrument of the White House to harass and prosecute Trump's political opponents."
On Wednesday, Trump appointed Gaetz, a lawyer with no law enforcement experience, to be the nation's top law enforcement officer. Trump praised Gaetz as a "gifted and tenacious attorney" who would "end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans' faith in the Justice Department."
Several Republican senators have expressed their opposition to the ex-congressman, who faced a yearlong investigation over allegations of having a sexual relationship with a minor, but no charges were filed by the Department of Justice.
According to Murphy, the jaws of Republican senators who will now have the opportunity to oppose Donald Trump in a way they have previously shied away from, could be heard dropping to the floor.
Since Trump had previously stated during his campaign that he intended to use the White House to target his political opponents, it was not surprising when he made the announcement.
"This choice for the head of the Department of Justice aligns with the commitments he made during the campaign."
