Top House Democrat expresses disappointment over Hunter Biden pardon and accuses Biden of inconsistency.
Rep. Pete Aguilar claims Biden did not uphold the rule of law.
On Wednesday, Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., criticized President Biden for breaking his promise and granting a pardon to his son, Hunter, stating that the decision was "disappointing."
Aguilar, the head of the House Democratic caucus, stated that he comprehended Biden's decision as a father, but argued that the pardon did not adhere to the rule of law. Lieu, who was present at the press conference on Wednesday, did not provide any comments regarding the pardon.
Although I comprehend the sentiment as a father, it's disheartening as someone who has frequently spoken about the significance of upholding the rule of law.
"The president gave his word and publicly stated that he wouldn't grant a pardon, but then he did, which is disappointing. I trusted him when he said he wouldn't," he said.
Biden's pardon has been criticized by Aguilar and other Democrats, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who expressed disappointment with the decision on Wednesday.
"Politico reported that Newsom said he understands the urge to protect Hunter Biden, but he believes the president's word, and therefore cannot support the decision."
Biden issued a pardon, stating that the investigation was politically motivated.
The president wrote that no reasonable person, upon examining the evidence of Hunter's cases, could arrive at any other conclusion except that he was targeted solely due to his relationship to the president, which is unjust.
Biden had pledged several times that he would not interfere in his son's case, first in June when his son was convicted on three felony firearm charges, and then in September after Hunter pleaded guilty to federal charges of tax evasion.
"Biden stated this summer that he would not take any action and would adhere to the jury's verdict."
