Some migrants are returning home in anticipation of Trump's policies, according to a report.
When waiting in Mexico, migrants are at risk of kidnapping and violence from cartels.
A report indicates that an increasing number of migrants are choosing to return home instead of dealing with the repercussions of President-elect Trump's proposed border policies.
Officials in Mexico report that between 50 and 100 migrants are now seeking "voluntary return" to their home countries. Some migrants attribute their fear to President Trump's plan to abolish a U.S. government app used to apply for asylum at the border.
"One migrant, Johana, told Reuters that she trusts she will arrive before Mr. Trump takes office and if it's not by appointment, there's always a way."
The Biden administration has utilized the app to facilitate the entry of hundreds of thousands of migrants into the US, while the Trump administration intends to abolish the program and reintroduce the "remain in Mexico" policy.
If migrants do not receive an appointment by the start of Trump's term, they will be stranded in Mexico and must choose to illegally cross the border, wait for their asylum process in Mexico, or return home.
Due to the risky atmosphere in Mexico, many are expressing a desire to go back home.
Yuleidi Moreno, a migrant without an appointment, cried daily and begged God to take her back, stating that she no longer wished to remain. "This is unbearable," she said.
If Nidia Montenegro could, she would choose to return home, like other migrants in the same position.
She informed Reuters that she was traumatized and if she didn't secure the appointment, she would return.
The officials in Trump's first administration emphasized that their policies were intended to discourage migrants from undertaking the perilous journey from Mexico to the U.S. border, where they are frequently subjected to kidnapping and violence by cartels.
The new administration, led by border czar Tom Homan, aims to stop illegal immigration and eradicate cartels completely.
According to Homan, Trump is dedicated to labeling them as terrorist organizations and utilizing the full power of the United States Special Operations to eliminate them, as they have killed more Americans than any other terrorist group globally.
