Republicans blast Zuckerberg over COVID-19 censorship in bombshell letter.
Zuckerberg confessed that his company succumbed to 'continual' pressure from the Biden-Harris administration to suppress posts.
Mark Zuckerberg has admitted that Meta was pressured by the Biden-Harris administration to censor certain COVID-19 content, giving House Republicans a sense of vindication.
Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., chair of the NRCC, stated that the Harris-Biden admin abused its power by pressuring social media companies to censor Americans' views online for too long, which stifled free speech.
Tom Emmer, the House Majority Whip and the third-ranking Republican leader, stated on the website that Mark Zuckerberg's letter to the House Judiciary Committee clearly shows that this was a deliberate attack on our First Amendment rights. This misuse of power must be stopped immediately.
Earlier this week, Zuckerberg wrote to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, expressing his regret for not being more vocal about government censorship concerns in 2021.
"In the end, it was our responsibility to decide whether or not to remove content, and we stand by our choices, including any modifications we made to our enforcement due to external pressure related to COVID-19," Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire founder of Facebook, stated. "I believe the government's pressure was misguided, and I regret that we did not speak out more forcefully about it."
Despite Zuckerberg's statement that the administration repeatedly pressured Facebook's teams for months, he emphasized that the company regularly hears from governments and other concerned parties worldwide.
The Biden administration has been investigated by Jordan for allegedly collaborating with social media companies to stifle free speech, a claim the White House has denied.
But Republicans now say Zuckerberg's letter is proof their suspicions were correct.
"Zuckerberg confessed that the Biden-Harris administration pressured him to suppress conservative perspectives. Accountability is necessary within the federal government," Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., stated on X.
Zuckerberg has admitted that Facebook censored information at the request of the Biden-Harris WH, and it's time to hold Big Tech accountable for their blatant censorship of conservatives, said Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla.
The White House stated on Tuesday that Zuckerberg's letter encouraged responsible actions to protect public health and safety during the deadly pandemic.
"We have consistently maintained that tech companies and other private entities should consider the impact of their actions on the American public while making their own decisions regarding the information they present."
