On Wednesday, Congressman Mike Johnson, R-La., is pushing forward with a vote on his proposal to prevent a government shutdown and tighten U.S. election laws.

Last week, Johnson had to scrap a vote on the measure due to GOP support bleeding away for several days following its unveiling.

On Tuesday, multiple sources informed Planet Chronicle Digital that the GOP leadership's attempts to convince Republican opponents of the bill were largely unsuccessful over the weekend.

A dozen Republican lawmakers are predicted to oppose the bill due to the slim four-seat majority and expected Democrat opposition.

"One House Republican told Planet Chronicle Digital via text message that the bill buys us a week of arguing over illegal immigrants. When asked if it was worth the news cycle if it failed, they replied, "At this point... I suppose.""

Another GOP lawmaker stated, "They're now at the point where they need to declare that they ran the play, label others as RINOs, let the Freedom Caucus say 'shut it all down,' and then wait for the Senate to block us."

They stated that they lacked the votes last week and didn't expect the situation to change this week.

Johnson stated that Congress must promptly fund the federal government and safeguard elections. He added that this is necessary for the sake of their constituents, and so they will proceed with a vote on the 6-month CR with the SAVE Act attached on Wednesday.

The speaker has a broad base of support from the conference.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, introduced the SAVE Act, which is now part of the spending bill.

On Tuesday, he wrote on X that "some conservative nihilists would rather cause failure and then complain about it" than pass an imperfect bill with Republican policies.

Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., a key ally, stated on Fox Business that he supports Speaker Johnson and the American people are in agreement with their stance.

The government faces a shutdown before Election Day as Congress struggles to meet the Sept. 30 deadline to fund fiscal 2025. The House has only passed four of the 12 required appropriations bills, while the Senate has not passed any.

Both Democrats and Republicans concur that a temporary extension of this year's funding, referred to as a continuing resolution (CR), is necessary to provide additional time for negotiations.

The SAVE Act, which proposes a citizenship verification for voter registration, has been deemed a nonstarter in the Democrat-controlled Senate and White House, with President Biden already threatening to veto Johnson's plan.

GOP national security hawks and senior lawmakers have urged for a shorter CR ending in December, fearing potential military readiness strains if funding continues until March.

A significant challenge for House GOP leaders is that many Republicans, including those who oppose the bill, believe CRs are inherently wrong because they increase federal spending.

The "messaging" bill that would not pass the Democrat-controlled Senate has caused frustration among those who were required to vote on it.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., wrote on X that Speaker Johnson is engaging in a fake fight by attaching a bright shiny object (that he will later abandon) to a bill that continues our path of destructive spending. I won’t be any part of this insulting charade.

To pass the SAVE Act, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., suggested that Congress should refuse to pass a CR until the Senate approves the SAVE Act and Biden signs it into law.

"Johnson will not commit to opposing the Democrats in a shutdown fight and will allow a clean CR to pass, funding the government, as he believes a shutdown will be attributed to Republicans and harm their election prospects."

Johnson's task is made more challenging by the presence of former President Trump, whom he met with over the weekend following an assassination attempt on the ex-president.

Trump has publicly endorsed the SAVE Act on his Truth Social platform but urged congressional Republicans to push for a government shutdown if they did not receive "absolute assurances on election security."
