The White House announced that President Biden would sign a bill to eliminate taxes on tipped wages, aligning with a policy previously proposed by former President Trump.
During a news briefing, Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, conveyed the stance of the Biden administration.
""The president supports eliminating taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers while also raising minimum wage and preventing the wealthy from gaming the system," she said."
On Saturday, Vice President Kamala Harris pledged to support policies that would benefit working families in regards to tip taxation.
She pledged at a Las Vegas campaign rally to continue fighting for America's working families as president, including raising the minimum wage and eliminating taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.
In June, Trump initially suggested removing taxes on gratuities for employees in the restaurant and hospitality industries.
During a rally in Las Vegas in June, Trump announced that his administration would not charge taxes on tips for hotel workers and others who receive them. This move, which has been a contentious issue for years, is a recognition of the important role that these individuals play in providing excellent service and taking care of people.
Over the weekend, he accused Harris of mimicking his proposal.
"Kamala lacks imagination, as evidenced by her playing 'COPYCAT' with NO TAXES ON TIPS! She only wants it for political purposes. This was a Trump idea – she has no original ideas and can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala has proposed the largest tax increase in history, which won't happen."
House Republicans in June introduced legislation to end the taxation on tips.
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., wrote on social media that as the cost of living rises, service industry workers, many of whom work a second job to make ends meet, should be allowed to keep all their tip money.
The Biden administration introduced a voluntary tip reporting system for industry workers to simplify tax compliance on tips.
Last year, Planet Chronicle Digital reported that tax experts criticized the plan as a crackdown on "waitresses' tips" after the IRS hired 87,000 new agents under the Biden administration.
