Biden administration faces subpoena over Kamala Harris's 'border czar' role from Jim Jordan.
The Biden administration is being subpoenaed to provide documents on the unaccompanied migrant children released into the US.
Vice President Kamala Harris was subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee for information on her border czar efforts, amidst concerns about unaccompanied migrant children.
On Wednesday, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra was subpoenaed by Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, due to allegations that the Biden administration has misplaced thousands of unaccompanied children who entered the border.
"The Committee has estimated that 'Border Czar' Kamala Harris and HHS have lost contact with over 145,000 unaccompanied alien children after placing them with sponsors, including ILLEGAL ALIENS. We are subpoenaing more information from 'Border Czar' Harris and HHS regarding these UACs."
According to a subpoena obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital, Jordan forced Becerra to provide documents that would reveal the number of unaccompanied alien children that HHS has been unable to contact directly through Safety and Well-being Calls after their release to a sponsor.
"Despite HHS's claim of being unaware of the Committee's request, HHS has been aware of it for over six months and possesses relevant documents and information. In fact, HHS has acknowledged understanding the Committee's demands in conversations with its staff."
Instead of following those requests, Jordan claimed that HHS had spent over a year hindering the Committee's investigation, including by misrepresenting the Committee's demand for data on UACs who did not respond to Safety and Well-being calls as a separate inquiry from the Committee's request for the number of UACs HHS had been unable to reach.
The Committee has been hindered by HHS's ongoing obstruction, so it must issue another subpoena to obtain information about the number of UACs who have not responded to a Safety and Well-being call after being placed with a sponsor.
The subpoena does not specifically target Harris, but Jordan's actions are part of the broader Republican efforts to examine the Democrat presidential nominee's record as Biden's vice president before the November election.
GOP scrutiny of Harris' role in addressing the root causes of mass migration from Central and South America has been renewed due to her candidacy.
Jordan's committee is arranging two hearings on the "Biden-Harris Border Crisis" - one in California on Friday and another in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, in addition to the letter and subpoena for Becerra.
The HHS stated that it does not provide commentary on ongoing litigation when asked for a response. Additionally, Planet Chronicle Digital contacted the vice president's office for comment.
