Amid a GOP-wide push for election security, the House launches a poll watcher program.
According to Rep. Bryan Steil, it is a crucial element of the solution, as he stated on Planet Chronicle Digital.
This week, the House of Representatives is introducing a program to increase transparency in the high-profile struggle for Congress control.
The House Committee on Administration Chair Bryan Steil, R-Wis., is thrilled to intensify the program and launch it in the final eight weeks before the election, as it has been successfully implemented in previous election cycles.
In November, over a dozen House races are predicted to be decided by narrow margins. The battle for control of the House between Democrats and Republicans is expected to be intense and could go either way.
The Election Observer Program is being promoted by the House Committee on Administration to increase accountability at polls during elections.
Eligible congressional staffers can participate in a training program to become poll watchers in the upcoming election.
If a congressional candidate in a close race requests it, they will not be sent out to their own district, but to other districts instead.
"Steil believes that this Congress can increase awareness, engagement, and participation in the program. The program, which has been successful for some time, has been participated in by Steil's staff. Steil considers it an essential component of the efforts to improve the integrity and confidence of Americans in elections."
To ensure that candidates and incumbents running in November are aware of the program's availability, it is crucial to increase its visibility.
Steil expressed frustration with the Biden administration's lack of response to his inquiry about security concerns regarding this year's elections, specifically regarding a June executive order aimed at increasing voter access using federal resources.
Steil stated that the administration is still concealing information about their work related to President Biden's executive order, particularly in regards to noncitizen voting. He suggested that efforts should be made to further establish this aspect.
Steil has focused on the House's Election Observer Program as one of several election security measures through his committee.
Meanwhile, Democrats have criticized several Republican-led election initiatives as voter suppression.
The Republican plan to mandate proof of citizenship in the voter registration process is being opposed by Congressional Democrat leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who labeled it "extreme."
Steil expressed hope that Democrats would continue to use the program as they had previously, but acknowledged that election integrity concerns have become highly politicized.
"The left has started to weaponize efforts related to election integrity, which were previously viewed as non-partisan."
"I believe we can elevate the program's visibility and engagement to the next level."
