A bipartisan pair of representatives takes action against gun smuggling at the US-Mexico border.

On Wednesday, a bipartisan House team will unveil a plan to combat gun smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Reps. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., and Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, are proposing a bill to increase staffing at outbound inspection points at the southern border and mandate inspections for at least 10% of outbound transport from the U.S. to Mexico.

The Secretary of Homeland Security must submit a report on the feasibility of increasing the minimum inspection threshold to 15 or 20%.

The bill proposes that Customs and Border Patrol should have at least 500 officers dedicated to inspecting the flow of goods and people from the U.S. into Mexico, as well as an increase in Homeland Security Investigations personnel focused on currency and firearms smuggling investigations.

The bipartisan legislation aims to increase resources for southern border inspections, including 50 additional non-intrusive imaging systems, as stated in a previewed summary by Planet Chronicle Digital.

The illegal flow of currency and firearms at the border contributes to the cartel's war in Mexico and the fentanyl crisis that is harming Americans.

The bill helps fix the issue of U.S. Customs and Border Protection not having the resources to monitor southbound flows, which serves as a good step in taking the fight to the cartels and disrupting their business operations, as stated.

As a former CIA case officer with experience in tracking cartels, Spanberger stated in a statement, "I understand how criminals smuggle firearms and bulk currency across our southern border to fund their illegal operations."

"To stop the influx of deadly fentanyl in our communities, we must work to disrupt the supply chain of contraband that sustains the drug trade," she stated.

At the end of this year, Spanberger will depart from the House to run for governor of Virginia, and the Republicans are viewing her seat in the Washington, D.C., suburbs as a promising chance to gain a seat.

The bill and her support for the Senate border deal, along with her focus on border security, seem to be part of a broader shift in the Democrats' strategy to retain the White House, Senate, and House in November.

The migrant crisis has put pressure on Democrats to support a border deal, but GOP opposition ultimately killed it, leaving cities and states to bear the burden.

The Enhancing Southbound Inspections to Combat Cartels Act, introduced by Spanberger and Crenshaw, has a companion bill in the Senate led by Sens. Maggie Hassan and James Langford, who were one of the architects of the original Senate border deal.

Despite bipartisan support, the new House bill may not receive a chamber-wide vote due to opposition from House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and other GOP members who argue that more money is not enough to fix what they view as fundamentally flawed border policies.

Republicans have been accused by Democrats of politicizing the border crisis.
