Officials confirm that Biden and Xi will meet in Peru on Saturday.
Their first known interaction since April is reportedly upcoming.
On Saturday, U.S. President Joe Biden will meet Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for what is likely their final meeting, according to senior administration officials, as Beijing prepares for a potentially more confrontational period with Washington under Donald Trump.
The two leaders are anticipated to discuss various global issues, including the escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing, during their talks at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Lima, Peru.
It will be their first known interaction since an April phone call.
"One official stated that the conversations are difficult, but their honesty has been crucial in maintaining the relationship."
Biden and Xi have made efforts to maintain peace on various issues, including Taiwan, the South China Sea, North Korea, and Russia, as well as American demands for more Chinese assistance in combating the supply of fentanyl, which is the primary cause of drug overdoses in the United States.
Biden and Xi resumed leader-level talks in November, resulting in increased cooperation on counter-narcotics efforts but no progress on significant issues such as the potential conflict over Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory.
The Democratic administration recently enacted rules limiting U.S. investment in AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors in China, which will be implemented in January. This move came after Biden increased tariffs on Chinese goods.
Both steps were rejected by China as counterproductive.
Beijing opposes Trump's plan to impose 60% tariffs on U.S. imports of Chinese goods as part of his "America First" trade measures.
Several hawkish voices on China have been appointed to senior positions by the president-elect, including U.S. Representative Mike Waltz as national security adviser.
Last week, Trump was reportedly called by Xi to congratulate him on his Nov. 5 election victory. Trump will begin his presidency on Jan. 20.
