Russia's potential assistance to North Korea's nuclear program poses a direct threat to Europe and Asia, according to a warning from the US.
Ukraine faces military action from North Korea.
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a grave warning that North Korea's participation in Russia's conflict with Ukraine could have serious implications beyond the immediate crisis, including the possibility that Moscow is assisting Pyongyang in its nuclear program.
North Korea is aiding Russia in its aggression against Ukraine, as stated by Blinken during a speech alongside Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha at NATO's headquarters in Brussels.
The support that Russia is providing to North Korea, which may include assistance for its nuclear and missile programs, poses a threat to civility and security in the Korean peninsula, according to him.
The Wednesday announcement from South Korean intelligence that North Korean troops had begun combat operations against Ukrainian forces in Kursk was in line with Blinken's comments, which came just weeks after the U.S. warned that some 8,000 North Korean soldiers had been moved to the region where Ukraine opened offensive operations in August.
Blinken described the development as "significantly negative," stating that it "enhances the danger to security and stability in both Europe and the Asia Pacific region."
The secretary stated that North Korea's direct combat operations against Ukraine suggest that adversarial nations such as Russia, North Korea, and Iran are becoming increasingly involved in malicious activities worldwide.
"Blinken stated that the U.S. and its NATO allies are highly focused on the increasing indivisibility and security between the Euro-Atlantic, Indo-Pacific, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East theaters, with Iran playing a significant role in this regard."
Ukraine's foreign minister concurred with Blinken's alerts and asserted that "the fate of Transatlantic and worldwide safety is being determined in Ukraine."
On Tuesday, Sybiha reported that Russia launched a new attack on Kyiv using drones and missiles, targeting the capital city for the first time since August. Despite the need for civilians to take refuge in underground train stations, no casualties have been reported.
"Russia is using Iranian drones and North Korean troops to attack Ukraine, and in return, it provides assistance to those regions. This war is undermining security in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and it is all connected," Sybiha stated.
To secure lasting peace and stability in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, it is necessary to compel Russia to cease its aggression, according to him.
As the incoming Trump administration prepares to assume power in January, Blinken's tenure as secretary of state, which involved managing one of the most challenging geopolitical periods between the West and its main adversaries since World War II, is coming to an end.
The uncertainty surrounding President-elect Donald Trump's approach to handling complex security situations, particularly regarding military aid to Ukraine, has increased. Blinken stated that the Biden administration will utilize its remaining time to enhance defensive aid to Kyiv.
Blinken stated that the Biden administration will continue to strengthen the alliance through daily efforts.
The secretary vowed to strengthen aid for Ukraine to effectively combat Russian advances and negotiate peace with Moscow over the next year.
