G20 summit in Brazil to be held 5 days after blasts
On Wednesday night, a square near Congress and the presidential palace in Brazil experienced two explosions, resulting in one death. The Brazilian Supreme Court was evacuated due to the incident, causing security concerns just before the G20 summit.
Before the Group of 20 major economies leaders meet in Rio de Janeiro, there are five days of blasts. Afterward, Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Brasília.
A blast occurred on Wednesday in a parking lot near the Supreme Court building. The court officials were promptly evacuated without any harm, as stated in a court statement.
The bomb squad was deployed by federal police to the central square in Brazil's capital to investigate the blasts. The country's solicitor general on social media described the explosions as an "attack."
The police officer informed the local TV that the body of the man discovered in the square contained an explosive device, and thus, a thorough inspection would be conducted to prevent any further explosions.
The iconic square in Brasília, connecting the principal buildings of Brazil's three branches of federal government, was the location of explosions that were heard around it.
Last year, on Jan. 8, there were riots as supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro vandalized the buildings in protest of his electoral loss.
On Wednesday night, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva exited the executive palace before the explosions occurred.
