This week, the Chinese city hosting the largest annual air show experienced a tragic incident, resulting in the death of 35 individuals and the injury of 43 others.
On Monday evening in Zhuhai, China, a man driving an off-road vehicle killed dozens of people and injured 43 others outside a sports center while they were exercising.
At 7:48 p.m., a 62-year-old suspect, identified only by his family name of Fan, was arrested by police after allegedly killing 35 people and attempting to flee. He was upset over his divorce settlement, authorities said.
The People's Liberation Army's annual aviation exhibition is currently taking place in Zhuhai, a southern Chinese city. The sports complex in the city is frequently utilized by hundreds of residents for running, soccer, and dancing.
The Chinese government closely monitored information about the event.
For nearly a day following the attack, the death or injury count remained uncertain. On Tuesday morning, a search on the Chinese social media platform Weibo for the sports center yielded only a few posts, with only a couple mentioning the incident without photos or specifics. Chinese media articles about the incident from Monday night were removed.
The censorship of search results for what happened was heavy for users behind China's Great Firewall. However, videos circulated on the social media platform X outside of the controls. In several posts, dozens of people were seen lying down on the running track at the sports complex.
In a video shared by Li Ying, a woman claims that her foot is broken. Meanwhile, a firefighter is seen performing CPR on a person while others are instructed to evacuate. Li, who goes by the username Teacher Li, posts daily news based on user-submitted content.
Investigators say that the unconscious man found in his car with a knife and wounds was likely self-inflicted.
In a statement Tuesday evening, Chinese President Xi Jinping demanded the "severe" punishment of the offender in accordance with the law.
