Farmers in central London protest against changes in tax laws.
The British government has abolished the tax-free status of farm inheritance.
On Wednesday, hundreds of tractors obstructed central London streets during a farmers' protest against the government's decision to end an inheritance tax exemption for agricultural families.
The "tractor tax," introduced by the government to increase revenue for strained public services, is opposed by farmers who claim it will harm family farms and decrease food production.
On Wednesday, farmers positioned their tractors near the Houses of Parliament in the hopes of persuading the government to alter its approach, or confront ongoing demonstrations.
Farmer Gareth Wyn Jones stated on Sky News that the situation is dire for agriculture, with rows of stationary tractors and protesters holding signs that read "No Farmers, No Food, No Future".
Over the years, Britain's competitive supermarket sector, inexpensive imports from other countries, and post-Brexit subsidy reductions have put pressure on farmers' incomes, according to farmers.
Farms were previously exempt from inheritance tax, but the government announced in October that farmers would be subject to a tax starting in 2026. This led to protests across the country.
In mid-November, 13,000 people gathered in Westminster, including Britain's most renowned farmer Jeremy Clarkson, the ex-Top Gear host whose show Clarkson's Farm is one of Amazon's top UK programs.
The government has consistently stated that there will be no change in the inheritance tax policy.
The government is aiding farmers through rural assistance programs, as stated by Environment Minister Steve Reed.
He stated on Wednesday that his focus is on assisting farmers, promoting rural economic growth, and enhancing Britain's food security.
From 2026, a 20% inheritance tax will be applied to the value of a farm exceeding 1 million pounds, with existing personal allowances allowing a married couple to increase the threshold to 3 million pounds.
