Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian President, is currently in an intensive-care unit recovering from surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage, as announced by the Sirio-Libanes hospital in a statement early on Tuesday.
The 79-year-old leftist leader underwent the procedure after experiencing headaches that doctors attributed to a fall at home in October.
Lula, who traveled from Brasilia to Sao Paulo for treatment, is "well and under monitoring in an ICU bed" after the bleeding was drained.
Brazil’s presidency has yet to issue any comment.
After the accident, Lula canceled a trip to Russia for a BRICS summit, leaving him with a visible cut on the back of his head, slightly above his neck.
A press conference will be held at 9 a.m. local time to discuss the surgery, as stated by Sirio-Libanes.
