A 5-year-old girl was allegedly smuggled across the border by a man who was caught by Texas troopers.
An individual claiming to be the mother disclosed to authorities that she paid $8,000 to smugglers she discovered online to transport her 5-year-old daughter across the border.
On Friday, a man was arrested by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers near the border in Del Rio, Texas, for his suspected role in smuggling a 5-year-old girl into the U.S. from Mexico.
A Dodge pickup truck was stopped by a Texas DPS trooper in Del Rio after receiving information that a man was carrying a child across the Rio Grande.
A 5-year-old girl who was carried across the border was transported to a hotel in another smuggler's vehicle, according to Lt. Chris Olivarez of Texas DPS, who spoke to Planet Chronicle.
The pickup truck was monitored by troopers until it was eventually stopped during a traffic stop.
Troopers discovered that the 5-year-old girl in the pickup truck was a Mexican national who had been smuggled into the U.S. during the stop. The image of the girl in surveillance footage was also matched to the girl in the pickup truck by the Trooper.
As he questioned the girl in Spanish, he noticed her bow, which was also visible in the video recording.
Dolores Lopez, the girl's mother, was present in the truck during the traffic stop.
The mother, originally from Mexico, is a temporary resident of North Carolina, according to Texas DPS.
Lopez admitted to finding a smuggling group online and agreed to have her daughter smuggled into the U.S. for $8,000.
Roman Ibarra Rojo, a smuggler from Mexico, was arrested by troopers after being charged with smuggling a person under the age of 18.
The DPS of Texas stated that Rojo admitted to being paid $1,000 to smuggle a 5-year-old girl into the US.
Olivarez said Rojo was previously arrested in 2022 for smuggling.
The mother, Lopez, and her daughter were recommended for charging with the U.S. Border Patrol for endangering her child. The district attorney will decide whether to prosecute the mother.
