The foreign policy of Harris-Walz is unclear, despite claims of success in a tumultuous global environment.
During her speech to the DNC, Harris reaffirmed her support for Israel, Ukraine, and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
Vice President Kamala Harris has not presented a cohesive foreign policy vision, and her opponents, the Trump-Vance campaign, are focusing on her record on the border, Afghanistan, and other related issues.
"Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that Kamala Harris and the DNC are ignoring national security concerns, which highlights their lack of policy ideas. Despite mentioning Trump's name over 150 times in their speeches, they have barely discussed the national security threats facing America and have not mentioned the Afghanistan withdrawal that occurred three years ago this week."
"Under Kamala Harris, the world is becoming increasingly dangerous, with Iran threatening to attack Israel, China expanding its influence, and ISIS regaining strength. Waltz argues that using buzzwords and slogans won't solve these problems and that we need to focus on practical solutions to rebuild our military."
"In contrast to the RNC's focus on making America safe and strong, Biden and Harris have failed to provide a plan and appear uninterested in protecting Americans."
The Democrats caused confusion this week with the release of a party platform that still referred to President Biden and his bid to seek a second term, despite the start of the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Mayor Regina Romero of Tucson, Arizona, co-chair of the DNC platform committee, explained that the platform was crafted "prior to the president passing the torch in an act of love and patriotism."
The Democrats' website announced that their platform was approved five days before Biden decided to step back and allow another candidate to face Trump. The party stated that the platform provides a "vision for a progressive agenda that we can build on as a nation and as a Party as we move forward into the next four years."
During her acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination on Thursday, Harris promised to pass the border security bill that the Republicans had previously rejected in the Senate.
Harris vowed to lead on space-based initiatives and AI development, confront Iran and its supporters, back Israel, and support Palestinian self-determination while criticizing Trump's relationships with world leaders such as Kim Jong Un and Putin, and pledging to stand strong with Ukraine.
Richard Goldberg, a senior adviser at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and a former NSC official, stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that the past three-plus years have been marked by a disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, which has given Russia the green light to invade Ukraine, led to maximum deference to Iran, and resulted in unprecedented hostility toward Israel.
"By allowing a wide open border for terrorists to enter and launch attacks, and by waging a war on American energy that benefits our enemies, she has played a key role in shaping one of the worst foreign policies in history."
Republicans have frequently contended that Harris' foreign policy proposals are evident from her experience as vice president and her close alignment with Biden's own policies. However, the absence of a comprehensive published platform detailing her plans for her first term has hindered her ability to refute this claim.
Harris stated on Planet Chronicle that the focus of the Biden administration is not to re-enter the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) "Iran nuclear deal," despite the administration's initial push to enact such a plan in its first two years. However, this push has softened in the past year.
Harris unveiled a comprehensive economic plan before the DNC in Chicago, which faced criticism, and is expected to release more details of her policy plan in a similar manner now that the convention has ended.
Harris has expressed her support for certain Biden administration policies, including the way the administration handled its exit from Afghanistan.
The Harris campaign has stated that the vice president "strongly supported" the administration's decision to fully withdraw from Afghanistan, despite a former military official claiming that Harris did not play a significant role in the deliberations.
In 2021, Harris, who serves as vice president and is deeply involved in the administration's crucial issues, revealed to CNN that she was the last person to speak with Biden before he made the decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, effectively ending more than two decades of conflict.
In 2021, the Los Angeles Times reported that Harris was "prominently featured" in Biden's plans for Afghanistan, attending "most of his security briefings" and participating in urgent intelligence sessions as the Taliban took control of the country following the US withdrawal.
The Times contended that Harris attempted to bridge the gap between her and Biden on policies, which would ultimately add the execution of the withdrawal to her resume.
Harris has reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he needs to agree to a cease-fire deal with Gaza and bring home hostages, and she has expressed her support for such a deal.
"Israel has the right to defend itself, and the manner in which it does so is crucial," Harris stated after meeting with Netanyahu prior to her presidential campaign announcement in July.
"The war must end with Israel's security, the release of hostages, an end to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, and the Palestinian people's right to freedom, dignity, and self-determination," she stated, as reported by Axios.
""Let's get the deal done so we can end the war, bring the hostages home, and provide relief to the Palestinian people," she said to Prime Minister Netanyahu."
Harris's role in managing mass immigration on the southern border has been the most contentious and burdensome for her, as she has emphasized in her campaign speeches that she has successfully prosecuted transnational gangs, drug cartels, and human traffickers, and has won, while she accused Trump of not following through on his promises.
The Trump-Vance campaign criticized Harris for her role as the "border czar" and her inability to effectively address mass migration and the ongoing fentanyl trade along the southern border.
Harris never held the position of border czar and instead concentrated on collaborating with countries south of the border to address the root causes of mass migration, as emphasized by the Harris campaign and its surrogates.
The number of people crossing the border has decreased significantly, according to the campaign and Customs and Border Protection figures. While the number of land border encounters reached a peak of around 300,000 by the end of 2023, it dropped to just over 100,000 in July, marking the lowest number since February 2021.
Harris stated that she will revive the border security bill that Trump had previously killed and sign it into law, despite Senate Republicans' earlier rejection of the bill. Republicans argued that the bill was worse than doing nothing, while criticizing their counterparts for failing to pass a House-backed border bill that aligned with their priorities.
The Republicans have been accused by Democrats of obstructing the bill at Trump's request, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., stated that they did it to gain political advantage during the election.
