A German tourist met a tragic end near the Canary Islands when a rare shark attacked her while swimming with her catamaran off the northwest coast of the popular travel destination.
On Saturday, Sept. 14, a 30-year-old woman was sailing on a British-flagged catamaran that had departed from Gran Canaria when a shark attacked.
During the attack that occurred around 4 p.m. local time, one of her legs was bitten off.
Emergency personnel flew 320 miles to evacuate the victim, but she died from her wound in the helicopter, authorities confirmed to Reuters.
The Salvamento Marítimo, Spain's rescue service, investigated the attack after the incident.
The Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File (ISAF) reports that there have been only six confirmed shark-related incidents in Spain's history.
In 2023, there were 69 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide, with 14 resulting in fatalities, according to the ISAF.
In Australia, 22% of shark attacks occur.
