ITA Airways has announced that an off-duty flight attendant died after boarding a flight bound for Rome, Italy, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.

On Saturday, Gabriella Cario, a 57-year-old mother of three, died after boarding ITA Airways Flight 1156 at the Reggio Calabria Airport in Naples.

"Gabriella Cario, our colleague, died on a plane returning home from Reggio Calabria to Rome last Saturday. The airline stated that she was off duty at the time of her death and that they are providing support to her family."

According to the Manchester Evening News, Cario was eager to return home to her husband and children in the Rome area, but her condition worsened on the aircraft and she passed away within minutes.

The Manchester Evening News reports that despite paramedics' attempts to resuscitate Cario, all passengers on the plane were required to disembark.

Her exact cause of death was not immediately clear.

On Saturday night, the FlightAware website revealed that the plane, which usually departs in the late afternoon, did not leave Naples until after 9 p.m. local time.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Alberto Mosca, the mayor of Sabaudia, Gabriella's hometown, said that he knew her and described her as a bright, always-smiling, and kind woman.

He added, "On behalf of the administration and the community, we express our deepest sympathy to her husband and her three cherished children."
