South Korea faces a new barrage of trash balloons from North Korea.
South Korea is accused by North Korea of flying anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets across the border, prompting a response from North Korea in the form of balloons.
On Wednesday night, "trash balloons" were launched by North Korea toward its southern neighbors, as reported by local media.
Over 160 balloons filled with trash were launched by North Korea across its southern border, according to Yonhap News Agency from South Korea.
In Gyeonggi Province, which surrounds Seoul, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) found numerous "trash bundles" filled with paper, plastic bottles, and other household waste, according to a report.
The JCS reported detecting approximately 420 balloons launched by the North into South Korea this month.
The latest tit-for-tat between the two Koreas involves a trash bundle, as they have been engaging in Cold War-style tactics since earlier this year, with the North flying thousands of balloons filled with wastepaper, cloth scraps, cigarette butts, and manure towards the South.
South Korean civilian activists flying anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets across the border have prompted North Korea's response with balloons.
In July, a North Korean balloon carrying trash landed on the South Korean presidential compound, prompting concerns about the security of crucial South Korean facilities. Officials stated that the balloon did not contain any hazardous materials and that no one was injured.
The North has been met with retaliation from South Korea in the form of loudspeakers blasting propaganda messages and K-pop songs.
The ongoing negotiations between North and South Korea are becoming increasingly tense due to North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and South Korea's increased military cooperation with the U.S.
