Pence calls for GOP unity in support of Ukraine against China and Russia.
Mike Pence, the former Vice President, states that Ukraine's victory is vital for the US to challenge China.
Former Vice President Mike Pence is urging fellow Republicans to support Ukraine in its war against Russia by criticizing the GOP's opposition to continued U.S. support for Kyiv.
Pence's main argument for the GOP to support Ukraine is also the party's primary argument against continued support - China.
"Assisting Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, China is hamstringing its ability to defeat Russia," Pence stated in a Tuesday memo with the conservative nonprofit, Advancing American Freedoms.
He stated that China's expansionist ambitions would be further fueled if Russia gained more control over Ukraine, which would give China access to more oil and natural gas.
Pence contended that a victory for Russia would benefit China and strengthen both authoritarian governments.
While many Republicans in the Senate, including Sen. Lindsey Graham and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have openly supported Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and some have even traveled to Ukraine, many House Republicans have expressed opposition to increased U.S. support due to spending concerns.
The GOP's division on supporting Ukraine has hindered its war effort and could negatively affect the party's chances in the upcoming election.
"America's security will be compromised if Ukraine falls, and it's no surprise that there are doubts about continuing aid to the country, as the Biden-Harris administration has not been successful at home and abroad," Pence stated in a Planet Chronicle Digital interview.
Providing lethal aid to Ukraine will prevent authoritarian regimes from becoming more aggressive, and ultimately protect our nation.
Some in the GOP have raised concerns about continued Ukrainian support beyond China.
The issues of U.S. border security and significant debt have led some to refrain from supporting Kyiv.
Pence stated that securing the border is more about willpower than money, as Putin has previously used refugees as a weapon and could do so again if not stopped in Ukraine.
The federal government has a massive overspending problem, but lethal aid to Ukraine has been worth every penny, he stated.
The memo highlighted that the U.S. has allocated only 1.5% of its federal budget to defend Ukraine and to "degrade" the Russian military from being the best in the world to being the best in Ukraine.
"If Russia attacks a NATO ally, we have a treaty obligation to defend, the cost would exceed 1.5% of the federal budget," he stated. "It is in America's best interests for Ukraine to win the war."
