On Thursday, an Islamist armed with a gun confronted German police outside the Israeli consulate in Munich, resulting in a gunfight that ended with the death of the assailant.
On Thursday at approximately 9 a.m. local time, the police confronted the suspect who was planning to attack the Israeli consulate. The suspect was armed with a long rifle equipped with a bayonet, and he fired back at the police when they engaged him. Although the police have not yet identified the assailant, they believe he was an Islamist based on the contents of his phone.
On the anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, the incident took place.
The gunman, an 18-year-old Austrian national with Bosnian roots, was the only person injured in the shootout.
"Joachim Herrmann, Bavarian Interior Minister, stated that an attack on the Israeli Consulate was likely planned early today based on the location of the shooter. If someone parks near the consulate and starts shooting, it is most likely not a coincidence."
The assailant's plan was believed to be a terrorist attack on the Israeli consulate, according to prosecutors and police.
Five police officers initially confronted the gunman and fatally wounded him. Following the incident, 500 additional officers were deployed to the area.
During the 1972 Olympics, Palestinian militants murdered 11 Israeli athletes and took several others hostage for an extended period within the Olympic village.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog and German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke about the shooting and expressed their shared condemnation and horror on social media platform X.
