Israel confirms that a Turkish-American citizen was unintentionally killed by the IDF during a riot.
From Seattle, Washington, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was 26 years old.
On Friday, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old activist from Seattle, was killed during a demonstration against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, as confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday.
The IDF stated that it is highly likely that she was unintentionally hit by IDF fire that was not aimed at her, but rather at the key instigator of the riot.
"An investigation was launched by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division after a violent riot occurred at Beita Junction, during which dozens of Palestinian suspects burned tires and threw rocks at security forces."
The IDF deeply regrets the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, as it stated.
Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State, stated on Tuesday that the killing was "tragic" and "the investigation has shown that eyewitnesses and have confirmed – her killing was both unprovoked and unjustified. No one should be shot and killed for attending a protest. No one should have to risk their life just for expressing their views freely."
Blinken stated that the Israeli security forces must undergo significant alterations in their West Bank operations, including modifications to their rules of engagement, according to our assessment.
"The second American citizen has been killed by Israeli security forces, which is unacceptable. We will make it clear to the Israeli government's top officials that this must change. We are carefully examining the investigation's results, but even on a preliminary basis, it is clear that significant problems need to be addressed, and we will demand that they be resolved."
The White House expressed its concern over the death of Eygi, a person who also held Turkish citizenship, and urged Israel to conduct an investigation into the incident.
According to Jonathan Pollak, the shooting happened approximately 30 minutes after the conflict between Palestinians and Israeli forces had ended.
According to the AP, Eygi, a volunteer with the activist group International Solidarity Movement, was present at a weekly demonstration against settlement expansion, which has resulted in Israeli crackdowns and protester stone-throwing for years.
