A tiger that escaped from a zoo in Mexico was captured after a weeklong search near a Texas border town.
Since Sept. 4, the 220-pound Bengal tiger had been on the run.
Officials in Reynosa, Mexico, have confirmed the capture of a Bengal tiger that had been on the loose for nearly a week following its escape from a zoo.
In a press release, Reynosa Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz revealed that a 220-pound tiger was captured in the city of Los Longoria, a Mexican border community situated opposite Granjeño, Texas, overnight on Tuesday.
"Thanks to the joint work of the Environmental Directorate and Civil Protection and Firefighters Reynosa, the feline was caught without injuries last night," Peña Ortiz said on Facebook.
Authorities placed three cages in the area of the tiger's sighting to capture it without causing harm to any animals after an extensive search and various attacks reported on other nearby animals.
The Quinta La Fauna zoo, which is worked with by several government agencies, reported that the tiger escaped on Sept. 4.
Officials in Mexico reported that the tiger was missing from her cage at 8:30 that morning, and the mesh on the cage had been destroyed, according to a news release.
Several social media posts reported sightings of a tiger north of the border, particularly near Mission, Texas over the weekend. Nevertheless, none of these sightings were confirmed by law enforcement, as per Border Report.
Concerns among South Texas officials centered on the possibility of the tiger swimming across the Rio Grande and entering the U.S.
Despite being able to swim up to seven miles per day, the tiger never left Mexico, even though the Rio Grande is only about 50 yards across at that location.
Officials announced that the Quinta La Fauna Zoo in Reynosa can no longer safeguard the escaped specimen, so it will be relocated to the Tamatán Zoo in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas.
Tamatán has the necessary facilities and staff to safeguard the animal, as stated by city officials.
