Why did the media wait until now to reveal that Harris's campaign was subpar?
Politico reported that Democrats are now accusing Biden of setting up Kamala Harris for failure.
As I observed the finger-pointing and blame-shifting surrounding Kamala Harris's loss to Donald Trump, a sudden realization occurred to me.
The majority of coverage during her 107-day campaign was positive, portraying her as a motivational leader who would bring the nation together.
Five minutes after Donald Trump was declared president-elect, a very different image surfaced.
Harris's campaign was poorly executed, with numerous mistakes and oversights. She failed to accomplish certain tasks, and was not up to the task at hand. She was unable to seize the moment.
Now they tell us?
Is it possible that the journalists, commentators, and analysts were concealing the vice president's struggles, mistakes, and inadequacies?
Well, here’s what that brings to mind.
Throughout much of his presidency, Biden was viewed as a skilled leader, albeit lacking excitement, but capable of accomplishing tasks, regardless of whether his policies were popular.
Earlier this year, some age-related stories emerged, but both White House officials and those covering Biden assured readers and viewers that he was, in one phrase, healthy.
"sharp as a tack."
The president faced intense criticism during the debate, and his inability to articulate clear thoughts ultimately led to his defeat.
Many media figures acknowledged that they had observed Biden's mental acuity decline and that he was often kept hidden from them. A few claimed that White House officials had informed them two years prior that Biden was not capable of running for reelection, but this was kept off the record.
Despite the president's confusion or wrong direction, many members of the press covered for him.
Why are the media's credibility ratings low?
As with Biden, many journalists concealed the severity of Harris's difficulties until it was no longer advantageous to do so.
The sniping between the Harris and Biden camps is causing us to receive a significant amount of this.
Politico reports that Democrats are directing their anger over losing the presidential race at Joe Biden, whom they blame for setting up Kamala Harris for failure by not dropping out sooner.
"The Democrats faced a significant disadvantage due to the candidate's advancing age, doubts about his mental abilities, and deep unpopularity. They were furious that they were forced to back a candidate whom voters had made it clear they did not want, and they remained in the race even after it became clear he couldn't win."
According to columnist Jonathan Martin, Biden supporters attribute her loss to her, while Harris defenders argue that Biden is responsible for the unfavorable political climate she faced.
"What about Harris's defenders complaining about being dragged down by Biden when she couldn't find a substantive policy issue to disagree with the unpopular incumbent on?"
Why not take some risks, given the scale of difficulty she faced and the initial, internal polling? If the other side attacks you as a liberal without a clear and sustained response, voters will believe the attacks.
I had previously suggested that Harris was being too cautious and sticking to talking points. However, after the day she passed over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, many pundits now believe that Tim Walz would do nothing for the ticket.
An exception to the wait-till-it's-over approach is a mid-October piece in Axios.
"Several senior Biden advisors are still coming to terms with the president's decision not to run for reelection and are adjusting to their roles on the campaign trail. Some members of the Harris team believe that White House aides are not effectively coordinating Biden's messaging and schedule to support his campaign."
The media must be held accountable for their mistakes in predicting Trump's chances and their inability to understand the working class's disconnect with Harris' party.
Even though there was nothing Harris could have done to stop the Trump juggernaut, painting a rosy scenario when things were actually dark for her ranks right up there.
