The Laken Riley Act is sent to Trump's desk by Congress as the first bill of the GOP's Washington takeover.
With Dem support, the bill passed both the House and Senate.
The Laken Riley Act, backed by the Republican Party, is set to be the first bill signed into law by President Donald Trump following the party's victory in both chambers of Congress and the White House.
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the bill with a vote of 263 to 156, marking the second time the lower chamber has advanced the bill this month.
The bill passed the House 264 to 159 on Jan. 7, with all voting Republicans supporting it and 48 Democrats voting in favor, which was two more than the previous vote.
The Senate passed the bill in a bipartisan vote of 64 to 35, with the GOP adding provisions for deporting illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes.
The bill proposes that ICE officers detain illegal immigrants suspected of theft-related offenses and enables states to sue the DHS for damages resulting from illegal immigration.
While many Democrats opposed the bill, those in favor of it argued that undocumented individuals who have broken U.S. law should be deported, regardless of whether they have been convicted.
Notably, more Democrats supported the bill when it passed the House this month than when it was first introduced in 2024. This is a significant change from last year when the Democrat-controlled Senate did not vote on the bill.
Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that nothing occurs in the town up north until the American public demands it, regarding the growing support from the left.
"They have been shrieking at the top of their lungs for a solution to the border issue."
Sarah's Law, which was led by Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, was one of the amendments adopted in the bill. According to Feenstra, the law was enacted nearly a decade ago in memory of 21-year-old Sarah Root, who was killed by an illegal immigrant while driving under the influence. The law not only brought justice to the Root family but also ensured that any illegal immigrant who harms or kills an American citizen is swiftly detained and prosecuted.
Trump's promises to combat illegal immigration and enhance border security are being pursued by GOP lawmakers through the Laken Riley Act, which they hope will be the first bill to receive the president's approval and solidify his agenda.
A nursing student was killed by an illegal immigrant while jogging on the University of Georgia's campus, and a bill has been named in her honor.
Jose Ibarra, who was given a life sentence for Laken Riley's murder, had previously been arrested but was never held by ICE.
