California sanctuary state policies were condemned by Huntington Beach leaders, who argued that they endanger public safety.
Officials in a Southern California city have decided to defy the state's immigration policies and no longer adhere to its sanctuary laws.
The Huntington Beach City Council unanimously approved the resolution "Non-Sanctuary City for Illegal Immigration for the Prevention of Crime" on Tuesday night, with Mayor Pat Burns introducing the legislation. The mayor stated that the decision was necessary for public safety.
It is in the best interest of our community, Huntington Beach, to ensure that we utilize every aspect of law enforcement to make it the best place to live, as stated by Burns, a former law enforcement officer, during Tuesday's meeting while a small bust sculpture of President Donald Trump stood nearby.
The directive instructs the city's police force to collaborate with federal immigration authorities and inform immigration officials prior to releasing an undocumented individual from prison.
The city stated in a news release that it deliberately avoids the Governor's attempts to undermine the efforts of federal immigration authorities and to declare its cooperation with the federal government, the Trump Administration, and Border Czar Tom Homan's work.
The practice of sanctuary cities, which prohibits their law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities, has been criticized for protecting criminal illegal immigrants from deportation.
The state is being sued by Huntington Beach over its sanctuary state laws, which the city claims are unconstitutional.
State lawmakers were criticized by Councilman Chad Williams for implementing policies aimed at safeguarding illegal immigrants, including those with a history of violent offenses, prior to the vote.
"We have the right to voluntarily cooperate with federal authorities to safeguard our community," he stated. "It's just common sense. Why wouldn't we utilize every available resource to ensure our community's safety?"
The attention of the public was drawn to crimes committed by illegal immigrants on behalf of criminal gangs such as MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, which were reported after their members allegedly terrorized residents at a Colorado apartment complex.
Weeks after California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed a "Trump-proof" legal defense fund of up to $25 million for California's justice department, Tuesday's vote came as Trump has promised to target criminal illegal immigrants for deportation.
The relaxed criminal laws and lack of enforcement in California make fighting crime challenging. Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates urged the State to support local law enforcement by removing restrictions on police officers and focusing on protecting innocent citizens in a press release.
"The State should not advocate for or support the violation of federal immigration laws, nor should it encourage cities to do the same."
