The House GOP outlines a plan to improve the healthcare system, emphasizing its impact on national defense.
If we want to Make America Healthy Again, the solution is to promote healthcare freedom, according to Rep Chip Roy.
On Wednesday, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, released a comprehensive report titled "Make America Healthy Again," which highlights the negative effects of the American healthcare system on "national defense."
"The Case for Healthcare Freedom," a 47-page report, is a meticulously researched summary of "America's health crisis and how to solve it," according to Roy.
In 2023, U.S. healthcare spending had reached $4.9 trillion.
The report states that health spending accounts for 17.6% of the nation's GDP, and its growth rate is around 1% faster than the annual GDP.
To maintain a strong national defense and low taxes, conservatives must reverse these trends.
"Roy stated that the Case for Healthcare Freedom presents a comprehensive plan for Congressional Republicans to assist President Trump in fulfilling his pledge to address the health crisis in America. According to Roy, the issue is not limited to health insurance, Big Pharma, or unhealthy food additives; rather, it is the fact that politicians, bureaucrats, and corporations all benefit from a corrupt, self-serving system that prioritizes profits over patients."
The congressman emphasized the need for Congress to seize the current opportunity to reform American healthcare by promoting patient and doctor empowerment through the expansion of health savings accounts in the budget reconciliation process. He argued that providing more power and money to the same actors would not be effective in achieving this goal. Instead, he advocated for healthcare freedom as the solution to controlling budgets and healthcare spending.
The report, which covers a broad range of topics, was released two days after President Donald Trump was sworn in for a second term. During his campaign, Trump's pledge to "Make America Healthy Again" gained prominence when Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a former Democrat who later became an Independent, endorsed him. Trump appointed Kennedy to head the Department of Health and Human Services, but his confirmation hearing has not yet been scheduled.
The program that offers food assistance to low-income households is subject to criticism in the report.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is expected to pay over $250 billion on junk food for the next 10 years, despite the fact that chronic food illness kills up to 678,000 Americans per year, according to Roy's office.
Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, has spent at least $25.8 million over the past decade on promoting two of its obesity drugs, Wegovy and Saxenda, to U.S. medical professionals. These drugs are marketed as "miracle medication" for weight loss and diabetes, and have even been endorsed by celebrities in recent months.
In 2024, families and their employers spent an average of $25,000 annually on health insurance, which is nearly the cost of a company car, despite the false promise of Obamacare to lower premiums by $2,500 a year. Since 2010, the cost of premiums has increased by at least 100%, according to the report.
According to the report, Obamacare has made healthcare so expensive that it now provides subsidies to households with an annual income of up to $600,000 for their health insurance.
In 2024, healthcare-related industries accounted for the top four spots in the American revenue rankings, with hospitals leading the way, followed by drug, cosmetics and toiletry wholesaling, health insurance, and pharmaceutical wholesaling.
The report also discusses how 47% of hospital cash prices are lower than the insurer-negotiated price that people pay hundreds of dollars a month for the privilege of having.
The report claims that a significant portion of revenue for insurance companies such as UnitedHealth, Anthem/Elevance, and Humana comes from taxpayer funds.
"The healthcare system in the United States is not a free market, as the government controls more than 80% of health spending. The Left's proposed solution to fix the system is to spend even more money and give the government even more control, which would cost an additional $33 trillion over 10 years and leave 70% of Americans financially worse off."
